1. IELTS writing is for 60 minutes. Task 2 (Essay) is longer than Task 1 (Graph/Letter) and it also fetches double the marks. It is, therefore, important that students wisely divide the time for each task. Spend 20 minutes on Task 1 so that they can take 40 minutes to attempt the essay comfortably.

2. IELTS students should essentially read and understand the topic thoroughly well. It is because an IELTS essay should address the different parts of the topic relevantly. Otherwise, the task would not be achieved and the IELTS student will lose marks.

3. While writing the introduction, every IELTS student should make sure that they use their own words. Copying the topic as it is to write the introduction will be penalised – copied material will not be counted and your total word count would come down. 4. After having thoroughly understood the different aspects of the topic – that is, after ensuring exactly what points in the essay are to be dealt with – make a plan mentally on how to approach the essay, what to write and how. You may use rough paper to jot down the points.

5. Divide the main body of your essay into paragraphs. You may write two or three body paragraphs depending upon the topic. It is in these paragraphs that you present your main ideas. You should write these ideas clearly and support them with examples. If your ideas are clear and well supported, you will get more marks.

6. While writing the main paragraphs, ensure that they are linked together using “coherence.” Your writing becomes exceptionally impressive if you use apt words or phrases for coherence. An example of good coherence is given below. a. Body paragraph 1 begins: “On the one hand….” b. Body paragraph 2 begins: “On the other hand….” The coherence used above clearly shows that your ideas are contrasting. What is the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic?

PTE is an International English Language Testing System. It is unique in that it is different from IELTS or TOEFL. The IELTS listening sections are divided into four parts. Each section has 10 questions and is heard once only totalling 40 questions for the listening test. You have time to look through the questions before you listen, and also time to check your answers after each section. The time for the test is 40 minutes. The listening takes 30 minutes, but you then have 10 minutes to answer. The listening test is the same for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training modules.

Listening Sections

The IELTS listening test consists of four sections. The first two sections of the test are concerned with social needs. The final two sections are concerned with situations related more closely to educational or training contexts. All the IELTS listening topics are of general interest and it makes no difference what subjects you are planning to study or what work you intend to do.

• Listening Section One

In the first section there is a conversation between two people set in an everyday social context, for example – a conversation in a train station.

• Listening Section Two

The second section is a monologue set in an everyday social context, for example – a speech about social services in society by an officer.

• Listening Section Three

The section three is a conversation between up to four people set in an educational or training context, for example – a discussion on project paper by students and tutors at college.

The last part is another monologue on an academic subject. It is a lecture or talk of general academic interest such as a university lecture.

You will listen to four recorded texts, monologues and conversations by a range of native speakers, and write their answers to a series of questions. These include questions which test the ability to understand main ideas and detailed factual information, ability to understand the opinions and attitudes of speakers, ability to understand the purpose of what is said and ability to follow the development of ideas. A variety of voices and native-speaker accents are used and you will hear each section only once.

The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is an international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. It is managed by the IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English, and was established in 1989. IELTS is one of the major English-language tests in the world.

IELTS is the only Secure English Language Test approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) for visa customers applying both outside and inside the UK. It also meets requirements for immigration to Australia, where the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic are also accepted, and in New Zealand. In Canada, IELTS, TEF, or CELPIP are accepted by the immigration authority.

What is IELTS for UKVI?

‘IELTS for UKVI’ is a UK government approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). This means that UKVI IELTS can be used to prove your English language abilities in support of a UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) application. This applies to everyone coming from a non-English speaking country. IELTS is accepted in  Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. But UKVI is only accepted in the UK itself.

Similarities Between IELTS and IELTS UKVI
