An introduction to IELTS

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is a test of English language proficiency and one of the world’s most popular and respected forms of English in education and migration.

Intended for non-native speakers who are looking to study or work in an English-speaking environment, IELTS training is an internationally recognised system for testing English language ability in four categories:

  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking

Since its introduction in 1989, IELTS preparation has become one of the most trusted forms of English-language assessment and is accepted by over 8,000 universities, employers and immigration organisations worldwide.

IELTS testing methods focus on the candidate’s practical ability to use English in real-life situations.

IELTS Test Types:

There are two different types of IELTS test and once graded, your IELTS score is valid for two years.

Academic IELTS is for international students who wish to study at a UK university or on other nations where English is the main language. IELTS, PTE, OET or TOEFL is mandatory to join an institute of higher education.

General IELTS classes focus on English survival skills and social and workplace language. It is ideal for those who are planning to migrate to English-speaking countries such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

IELTS 9-Band Scale
Students will be given a score of 1-9 for each part of the test. Your average score produces an overall IELTS band score, and you can be graded on whole or half points.

Score Skill Skill Overview

Band 9
Expert user: Fully operational command of the language: appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding.

Band 8
Very good user. Fully operational command of the language with only occasional inaccuracies and inappropriacies. Misunderstandings may occur in unfamiliar situations. Handles complex detailed argumentation well.

Band 7
Good user: Operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning.

Band 6
Competent user: Generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriacies and misunderstandings. Can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations.

Band 5

Modest user:
Partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic communication in one’s own field.

Why should you take an IELTS test?

IELTS scores are widely accepted by more than 10,000 organizations across the globe, including universities, employers, and migration authorities as valid proof of the candidate’s English proficiency.

Besides these, the test actively avoids cultural bias and treats candidates with utmost fairness. The one-on-one speaking test provides a real-life like situation in which the candidate is given an opportunity to speak naturally. It seems to be a convenient test that assesses the candidate’s English language skills almost accurately and provides no restrictions on candidates re-taking the test. Moreover, the candidate may receive their test results in 13 business days after the test. Last, but not least, the test can be accessed from any of the many test centers widely strewn across the globe either in the pen and paper format or in the CBT (Computer Based Test) format.

It would be a bright idea even for any job aspirant to get their command of English assessed at a time when the job market turned global, shrinking the whole world to be one nation because of the unprecedented positive impact of the Internet.

That said, why not joining the Best IELTS Coaching Online or Offline at your earliest convenience?
Procrastination is not for the bright and discerning students!

Taking decisions at the right time itself is a proactive step forward. Rejoice, since the future for you and humankind seems to be bright.

When you should take the exam and how long you need to prepare depends on your current ability. It is advisable however that you begin preparation lessons 2 to 4 months before your exam date. Since the format of IELTS is entirely different from the similar English tests of India, you should ensure that you are good at the language skills such as, spelling, various sentence structures, the correct use of various tenses, the apt use of lexical resource such as collocations, phrases, phrasal verbs, synonyms and antonyms, the sub-skills of pronunciation such as stress, diction & intonation, and the proper use of linking words and ideas (cohesion & coherence).
This depends on your current level and the score you wish to achieve. To improve your IELTS score, an average student will need to take seek professional help in order to be comfortable with all the 4 modules and to be confident in taking the exam in a time bound atmosphere. In addition, to achieve a A higher band of 6.5 or more, you to undergo as many mock tests as possible.
