top-tips-and-strategies-for-OET-writing

While English language testing systems like IELTS and TOEFL test the candidate’s academic skills, OET merely tests their ability to communicate in English for specific purposes in a healthcare environment. For this, OET writing uses real workplace scenarios that the candidate will come across in an English-speaking country. Professionals with a healthcare background would find this familiar to them and passing the OET test would be an easy task for them. No wonder OET writing is much sought after among all kinds of healthcare professionals!

There is only one task in the OET Writing sub-test and that is writing a referral/transfer/discharge letter based on case notes that will be given to test takers. The organisation and basic format of these letters are as follows.

Dear Ms Lara,
Re: Mr Stefan Joseph, 79 years old
Mr Stefan Joseph is being discharged back to your facility for continuing care and assistance. This letter will outline his detailed discharge plan.
Mr Joseph underwent left total hip replacement surgery successfully. He was disoriented post-operatively, probably due to anaesthetic effects, and was advised continued observation.  Three units of packed red blood cells were also transfused for a drop of haemoglobin. Therefore, ongoing monitoring is required for anaemia. He has been recommenced on Aspirin and Ramipril, whereas Panadiene Forte has been commenced post-operatively.
During hospitalization, he has been assisted in daily dressing at the surgical site and also he could be actively involved in occupational therapy, range of motion, stretching and strengthening exercises. Mr Joseph has good mobility and possible weight-bearing with the help of a mobility aid.
As per the discharge plan, kindly monitor his medications, especially Panadiene Forte, and preserve skin integrity. It would be appreciated if you could continue the exercise programme for him. The hospital will provide a walker and pillow, and has organized two-week hire of a raiser from a local medical supplier. Staples will be removed within 2 weeks. Of note, he needs to do a full blood examination and urea, electrolyte and creatinine test here at City Hospital Clinic.
Kindly do the needful. Please contact me for further queries.
Yours sincerely,
Charge Nurse
