When you should take the exam and how long you need to prepare depends on your current ability. It is advisable however that you begin preparation lessons 2 to 4 months before your exam date. Since the format of IELTS is entirely different from the similar English tests of India, you should ensure that you are good at the language skills such as, spelling, various sentence structures, the correct use of various tenses, the apt use of lexical resource such as collocations, phrases, phrasal verbs, synonyms and antonyms, the sub-skills of pronunciation such as stress, diction & intonation, and the proper use of linking words and ideas (cohesion & coherence).
