What is IELTS for UKVI?

‘IELTS for UKVI’ is a UK government approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). This means that UKVI IELTS can be used to prove your English language abilities in support of a UK Visa and Immigration (UKVI) application. This applies to everyone coming from a non-English speaking country. IELTS is accepted in  Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. But UKVI is only accepted in the UK itself.

While there is no change in the content, format, or level of difficulty and scoring, IELTS for UKVI simply follows certain extra security protocols to ensure the authenticity of the test taker. Also, your Test Report Form (TRF) may look slightly different from the one given for IELTS Academic or General Training.

What is IELTS Life Skills?

IELTS Life Skills is a UK government approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) that assesses your English speaking and listening skills at Level A1, A2, or B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

This is the test to take if you are applying for the following types of UK visa:

• Candidates who are compliant to work as Senior Caretakers
• Family Visa
• Extension to family, spouse, or partner visa
• indefinite leave to remain or citizenship.

IELTS Life Skills is available at two levels:

• IELTS Life Skills – A1 Speaking and Listening
• IELTS Life Skills – A2 Speaking and Listening (offered in the UK only).
• IELTS Life Skills – B1 Speaking and Listening

Similarities Between IELTS and IELTS UKVI

IELTS General Training, IELTS Academic, and IELTS Life Skills or IELTS UKVI tests are accepted by the UK government for visa and immigration as proof of applicants’ English language proficiency if they are visiting the country for studies, work, and life. These tests are managed by the various IELTS partners such as the British Council and taken based on the same content, format, examiners, difficulty level, scoring band, and so on.

These tests have been designed by some of the leading language and language assessment experts. So, when you give one of these tests, your full range of English language skills will be examined.

Additionally, you need to clear each section and obtain minimum marks set by the respective university or employer to successfully get admission or a new job abroad. The committee will assess your following skills through the test:

1. Listening
2. Writing
3. Reading
4. Speaking

Difference between IELTS and UKVI

IELTS and IELTS for UKVI are the exact same test in terms of format, content, scoring, and level of difficulty. The only difference is an IELTS for the UKVI test is approved by the UK Home Office for work, study, and migration purposes.

There are 12 centers offering IELTS tests (paper-based or computer-delivered) in Kerala whereas Kochi is the only Exam Center offering UKVI tests. Also, Normal IELTS tests are not recorded whereas UKVI tests are video recorded.

Who needs IELTS UKVI?

If you’d like to study in the UK, you may need to take a UKVI IELTS to demonstrate your English language ability in order to apply for a Tier 4 Student visa. If you’re a student or medical professional with ‘below degree level’ (Diploma), you’ll need to take an IELTS for UKVI test.

How long is UKVI IELTS valid?

As a general rule, a Test Report Form is valid at least for two years.

Does UK accept regular IELTS test?

UKVI can be used to prove your English Language abilities in support of UK Visas and Immigration. Only IELTS exams with ‘UKVI’ in the titles are accepted by the UK Home Office. As standard, the UK Home Office requires an overall pass rate of 4.0 as part of the visa application. However, the pass rate for registering with the NMC is much higher.

What is the required IELTS band score for work in the UK?

To become a nurse or midwife in the UK, there are two IELTS options:

1. UKVI IELTS
2. IELTS or OET (Bachelor of Nursing or above)

The IELTS or OET exam requires a pass rate of 7.0 in Reading, Speaking and Listening, and 6.5 for Writing whereas UKVI General Training requires an overall pass rate of 4.0.
